As posture greatly influences how well your back works, it’s not so surprising that many sufferers have found relief from their symptoms through the Alexander Technique, a training programme whose prime purpose is to overcome poor habits of posture and movement, but which also has the additional aim of reducing reaction to stress by lessening both physical and mental tension.

Training in the technique – which was devised by an Australian actor, Frederick Matthias Alexander – takes the form of a series of lessons in which the teacher guides the pupil to ‘experience’ their innate posture, movement and balance, which, according to Alexandrian teachings, become ‘lost’ or distorted by accumulated stress. Further lessons are also said to provide ‘inspiration for deeper change’ and bring about improvements in body-mind functioning.
