Air cleaners remove airborne contaminants from the air in controlled areas. They are an option if you are living in an area where the air is noticeably polluted. The most popular models are portable and electrically powered. There are a variety of air cleaners on the market, and all of them are quite costly. If you are considering buying one, it is a good idea to hire one first to test its effectiveness. The efficacy of air cleaners has not yet been scientifically demonstrated.

Caroline, a 29-year-old chronic asthmatic, has found air cleaners helpful in controlling her asthma symptoms:

I live on a busy main road and am exposed to a constant build up of tyre dust and fumes. I bought an air cleaner for the bedroom and the results were immediately positive. I have since challenged my doctor, who had never suggested I try an air filter. He still remains fairly unconvinced that it is responsible for my improvement, but under the circumstances I think it has at least been a contributing factor.

ALLERGIES AND COPING WITH MODERN ENVIRONMENT: ORGANIC DIET

If all of the above changes have been made, and the chronic illness still has not been sufficiently improved, the patient should try eating a diet composed entirely of organic foods for two weeks. Preferably this should be the Rotary Diversified Diet described in Chapter 18.

It would be ideal if every person could eat organic food all the time. This is impossible to advocate today, since the supply of truly organic food of high quality is severely limited. Unsprayed, uncontaminated food should be made available first of all to those people who simply cannot function without it—the patients in advanced stages of chemical susceptibility.

An increasing demand for organic, uncontaminated food, however, should eventually lead to an increased supply of products. Consumers should be aware, however, that what passes for “organic” and “natural” nowadays is often not very pure, and susceptible patients often have reactions to what are at best semi-organic products.

ALLERGIES: HYPERACTIVITY (PLUS-TWO REACTION)

One of the major forms of plus-two reactions is hyperactivity. This is also sometimes called hyperkinesis. Far more common in males than females, it is marked by distractability, inappropriate responses, and irritability. Supercharged and jittery behavior can occur at any age but is particularly common among children. It is often accompanied by aggressive actions, temper tantrums, poor schoolwork, and sometimes by overweight. This was first described in 1947.This sort of behavior has become increasingly common among children, and many theories have been advanced to account for it, ranging from Freudian interpretations of family life to the incrimination of television violence. Often, however, the problem is an allergic/addictive response to some food eaten in a compulsive fashion or to some chemical encountered in the course of everyday life. Removal of these substances and overall environmental control can often help such children in a dramatic way.

LEVELS OF REACTION IN ENVIRONMENTAL DISEASE: STIMULATORY LEVELS

Plus-one cases are rarely seen by a physician. The plus-one patient is basically a happy person, mildly stimulated by a “natural high.” He rarely, if ever, thinks of himself as a candidate for serious illness.

Plus-three and plus-four cases, on the other hand, are sometimes brought to a physician, and such cases could be presented. (In her manic phase, for instance, Nora Barnes was a plus-four case.) These cases are relatively rare, however, since before the average food or chemical addict reaches this stage, his withdrawal symptoms have usually become more and more pronounced. It is this withdrawal phase which brings him to the doctor’s office—not the previous “high.”

This is why a discussion of stimulatory reactions focuses on the plus-two stage. It is here that we find at least three serious medical problems: hyperactivity in both children and adults; obesity; and alcoholism, the acme of the food-addiction problem.
