I always get excited about seeing a classic movie for the first time. A few years ago I was pumped when me and a friend of mine finally picked up The Godfather to watch for the first time… and I was blown away by it’s pure brilliance and shocked at how much cinema has been influenced by it (you just can’t appreciate that until you’ve seen it for yourself). Lawrence of Arabia was the same sort of thing for me too. Damn, the list goes on and on. So the other day I finally sat down to watch the original “The Wicker Man”. Man I’ve heard so much about this movie… about how it’s a horror classic, about how brilliant it is… about how eerie it is… yadda yadda yadda. So all excited I put the dvd in… and then proceeded for wait for an hour and a half for anything interesting to happen… then the credits rolled. I mean holy crap… that was one of the most boring snooze fests I’ve ever seen in my life. Not once did I care about the little girl, not once did I feel a sense of mystery or eeriness, not once did I feel “shocked” or frightened or even nervous. Whheeeee… singing dancing naked ladies. Whoopie freaking do. And look, please don’t hit me with the “You have to understand in it in the context of it’s time” argument. I understand that. But a great film is a great film and withstands the test of time. Like The Godfather or Citizen Cane or Sparticus or Ben Hur. Great stories transcend time and can overcome cultural and era changes. The Wicker Man didn’t do that… at least not for me. I mean, seeing Christopher Lee with that crazy hair was almost worth watching the movie for… but not quite enough. The film was just straight up boring. They set up the premise right away (which is something I appreciate) but they never really move on from there. A police officer comes to an isolated island to investigate reports of a missing little girl… only everyone on the island claims to know nothing about such a girl. Good idea to start with… but as I said nothing really transpires after that until the big anti-climactic finish. So help me out. Am I the only one here who thinks The Wicker Man is horribly overrated? If you’re one of the people who appreciates it, what is it that I missed?

Wedding Crashers or Harold and Kumar

It’s going to be a bit of a slow news day since I’ll be traveling most of it (I’m heading to LA today). But something came up yesterday that kind of surprised me. In my post about the stupidity of Harold and Kumar, a couple of people actually suggested it was a better movie than Wedding Crashers. So, I thought why not open it up to discussion…. so what do you think? Which is funnier: Wedding Crashers, or Harold and Kumar?

New Barbarella?

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry but like or not folks Barbarella may be showing up in a theater near you, a new Barbarella that is. The nice folks over at cinematical.com give us this on the story: Dino De Laurentiis wants to update the classic story of the lady who nearly dies of pleasure while taking sex to outer space. I’m not sure how, but this new franchise will not be a remake, but “a completely new Barbarella,” according to De Laurentiis Ok, ok this is not the best news of the day but if there was anyone who had to produce this movie at least it is De Laurentiis, the guy has been around. I’m actually surprised that he didn t have a production credit on the first Barbarella because he was certainly making movies similar and around the same time. From Thee Day of the Condor to Flash Gordon and the Conan the Barbarian series this man has done some of the most fun b-movies and a few straight A types since long before many of us were born. So we know that this movie will be funded properly but…how exactly will this go? Thankfully they don’t want to use the original script, or the actors (somehow I do not think Jane Fonda would be on board even if they did want her). If they made a new action comedy that just had the flavor of Barbarella (and the costumes of course) with a sparkling sexy girl who knows how to play comedy then it could be a fun romp, but they really would have to find someone spectacular. If there was a good cast and a fun script it could be a super popcorn flick. I fully approve of a remake of this movie because really, at least with Barbarella we are not treading on anything close to sacred film ground.
The basic idea is that the movie is a collection of 10 separate mini stories each revolving around one of the Ten Commandments. fantastic idea, backed up by a great cast which includes: Jessica Alba, Famke Janssen, Winona Tyder, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry, Ron Silver, Paul Rudd, Adam Brody and Oliver Platt. Not bad. Well, this morning Jake gave me the heads up on a trailer for the project. It’s REALLY odd… but it’s just a trailer. I can’t wait to see this film.

Harrison Ford Work Out Regiment For Indiana Jones

Even though I still refuse to allow myself to actually believe they’ll finally give us the long awaited Indiana Jones 4 movie that I’ve been dying to see for 17 years now… it appears Harrison Ford has no doubt about it. The man is apparently already engaged in a high intensity work out regiment in order to get himself in the right shape to play Indy once again. The good folks over at M&C give us this: The 64-year-old is making every effort to get in shape to reprise his role as the adventuring archaeologist, 18 years after his last outing. A source close to the actor is quoted as saying: “He’s been furiously working out on the treadmills at a Los Angeles gym for about three hours a day to get in shape. “He’s on a strict high protein diet. He’s eating lots of fish and vegetables. It’s hard but he’s already looking great for it. He wants to make sure Indiana is as tough as he always was.” On a treadmill 3 hours a day??? yikes. I have a very hard time believing that… but if it’s true, then good for him for showing that kind of commitment. Me, I’m still waiting for the day that someone will deliver me my Ice Cream so I don’t have to walk to my car to go get it.

Yes yes yes… we all know that Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer will suck. I know that… BUT… that doesn’t negate the fact that I actually really like this new little TV spot trailer for it that just came out. So what do you guys think of it?

I’m not a big fan of gore just for the sake of gore. Gore is a tool in the hands of the right director who understands how to use it in order to solicit the desired response from an audience. Saw 3 is a great example of gore being used WRONG. The director of Saw 3 mistakenly thought (as many do) that gore was the goal… it’s not… it’s just a device that should help you reach your goal. This is one of the reasons I thought the first Hostel worked. Hostel wasn’t just a gory film (although obviously there was TONS of gore). It was a scary film. Eli Roth used the gore as just a tool to get the responses he wanted out of the audience after combining it with other tools at his disposal such as tension, atmosphere and conflict. All things Saw 3 never did. This morning our friend Peter from Slash Film sent me his review of the film (he got to see a screening the other night with Eli Roth in attendance) Hostel 2. Here’s what he had to say:And yes, the film begins only seconds after the ending of Hostel: Part I, with Jay Hernandez on the train. This is a nice touch. Roth uses the cinematic reunion to explain to any newcomers what happened in the first film. It’s done through quick flashbacks, and dosen”t feel at all like exposition. I also think this film shows Roth’s growth as a cinematic horror director. There were some shots and sequences that impressed me immensely. Or it could be that he had the money and time this time around (Hostel: Part I cost under $4 million). As Roth requested, I don’t want to give too much away in terms of plot. So I’m sorry if I left out some of the details. Truth be told, the audience loved the flick, and so did I. It’s the rare sequel that is better than the first. But squeamish beware, Hostel: Part II pushes the R-Rating to it’s limit. And that might be too much for a lot of people. I dare you to see it!The whole review is a good one and you should check it out if you get the chance. Personally, I’m a bit surprised to read Peter’s review. I really haven’t been at all impressed with anything I’ve seen from Hostel 2 so far. The marketing for the film has been a disgrace (not that there hasn’t been enough of it… just that it’s been piss poor in my opinion). But after reading at least this first review… my expectations are raised at least a little bit.

Plot Synopsis For Cannibal Holocost 2 Divulged

We get news of the new Cannibal Holocaust sequel from Bloody-Disgusting via moviesonline: Our friends at Bloody-Disgusting just got word on the synopsis for the Cannibal Holocaust Sequel. The film is about Professor Harold Moore, a New York anthropologist traveling to the wild, inhospitable jungles of South America to find out what happened to a documentary film crew shooting a film about cannibal tribes. So there you have it folks, it is not a lot of news, but it is a synopsis. As a matter of fact if you saw Cannibal Holocaust you may have been able to get this plot synopsis yourself. I am here to announce the news and confirm your suspicions. I will say this as a matter of commentary. Cannibals are creepy as hell. Zombie cannibalism is creepy enough but people making the conscious decision to eat other humans is stranger still. My tattoo artist has a delightful tabletop book on cannibalism and I was reading it before a sitting recently. It was interesting, shocking, and delightfully gruesome. The surface has not yet been scratched when it comes to cannibal films.

Routh To Play Superman In Justice League?

Exciting Justice League news out today. It seems like Routh is excited to be The Man Of Steel in the ensemble super hero picture! We get the following news via the mouth of Routh from the moviehole: With word that the Justice League script is ready to roll, the question now is a ) when will it kick off (will it kick off before the Superman Returns sequel?) and b) who will be a part of it, cast-wise. The new Man of Steel, Brandon Routh, tells IESB that he d definitely be interested in reprising his role as Superman for the Justice League movie and he d be keen to work with Christian [Bale, who plays Batman] and whoever else was to be a part of it .I think this is huge news. If they are going to make a Justice League at the same time they are making films with Routh and Bale, I consider it mandatory to get them involved in the projects. It would be a fantastic touch to see the heroes played by the same actors and for me it would really sell the “feel” of the Justice League. They do not have budget back up Superman and Batman, they have the real deal. I was not thrilled with the last Superman film, but Routh was great. I thought the decision to have Superman as an absentee baby-daddy was a titanically retarded idea. Superman does not leave earth for a few years to “figure stuff out.” He is a hero, and heroes put others before their emotional breakdowns. To see Routh and Bale side by side as super heroes would just be a fantastic time. If they can get a good story together I can see geeks across the globe crying blood with delight. Now all we need to know is who will play wonder woman.

One of my favourite parks on the outskirts of Bangkok is Suanluang Rama IX. This 200 acre park was dedicated to H.M. The King about twenty years ago. The park is popular during early morning and late afternoon for fitness fanatics who jog around the park in the coolness of the day. It is also a great place for people who are interested in flowers. Apart from the botanical gardens, there is an area of the park that has been set up to represent different sections of Thailand?s varied plant species. A great place to study what Thailand has to offer. I have been to the Rama IX Park quite a few times as it is on the border of Samut Prakan Province. It is also situated behind Seri Center and Seacon Square where I often go at the weekend. I enjoy strolling around the park at the end of the day. Entrance is only 10 baht per person and 30 baht for your car. I was there again today because they are now having their annual Flower Festival. This popular flower show always happens during December around the time of H.M. The King?s birthday. As well as all the flowers on show, there are also many stalls selling garden plants that you can buy and take home for you. I bought a few orchids for myself. You can usually get two or three for only 100 baht. The park is also popular for university graduates who go there dressed in their gowns to be photographed in front of the colourful flowers. Even if you cannot get here for the flower festival, the park is a refreshing break from the city and a chance for you to refresh your lungs and smell something beautiful for a change. Today was obviously a bit busy but it is quiet on most days. You can eat a picnic in the shade of a tree or rent a boat to go out onto the lake. There is also a museum dedicated to the work of H.M. The King. I have marked the park for you at ThailandPhotoMap.com

Learning Lao in Luang Prabang

I have been finding it interesting comparing Thailand and Laos. In many ways their cultures are similar. They share the same religion and also many of the same festivals. However, Laos is more untouched by the outside world and so their way of life is more genuine and hasn’t been diluted so much by Western influences. Before I left home, I did make an effort to learn some Lao. I think it is always important to at least use the every day polite words in any country that you are traveling. For Laos, some of the keywords and phrases you should learn at least are “sabaidee” which is used as both a greeting and farewell. Then for thanking someone, you should say, “khob jai”. I was in a book shop this morning and the owner greeted me with “sabaidee”. I replied with the same phrase. And then he turned to speaking in English to me. His English was good but he had trouble at one point. I then rephrased it in Thai without thinking and he immediately replied back in Thai. We then ended up having a long conversation in Thai which he found much easier. He says a lot of the town people can speak and understand Thai because they watch Thai television and listen to Thai music. However he said he couldn’t write Thai and could only read a little. Which is a bit surprising because there is a lot of Thai products here with all the words written in Thai. I think I found shopping the most difficult when it comes to the language. Partly because the numbers are so large. A meal in Thailand could be about 25 baht. But in Laos you could pay at least 10,000 kip or more. It doesn’t help that words in Lao and Thai are also nearly the same when it comes to numbers. So, I keep getting a shock when they say to me “neung saen” (100,000) for something in the night market. There are a couple of other differences. For example, twenty is “sao” and twenty five is “sao haa”. In Thai, they don’t say “ten thousand”. They say “one unit of ten thousand”. In Laos, they sometimes do like this, though often I hear them say “sib pun”. A final difference is that there are no “r” sounds in Lao any longer, so one hundred is “hoi” instead of “roi” which is said in Thailand. Both the Thai and Lao scripts are related to the same family. However, Lao has been simplified post-Communist takeover and so there are fewer characters. Some letters look very similar to Thai while other letters look like the wrong one! For example, the letter that looks like a “ror” sound is in fact a “hor” sound. Despite this, I think it would be fairly easy for me to learn to read Lao. There are a number of road signs I could work out already as well as menus in restaurants. Talking of restaurants, in Thailand, if you want to order two glasses of beer you would say “bia song gaew”. But here that translates as “two bottles of beer”! I am sure there other linguistic traps like that to be careful about. One of the best things about the night market here, and even the tuk tuk drivers, is that they are not only very polite, but not persistent too. In Thailand, you can easily get bombarded by people wanting to sell you things. They often don’t leave you alone and follow you around until you give in. But, in Luang Prabang, walking through the market I only got greetings of “sabaidee”. If I didn’t make eye contact, then they wouldn’t try and sell me something. If I did looked interested, they would only ask once. If I said “no”, then that would be it. They would allow me to move on. I think it would be really nice to bring some of the Thai vendors here for a training course. The Thai tuk tuk drivers could learn something too. When I walk by their Lao brothers they usually only say “sabaidee”. When they do ask if I want a tuk tuk, I only need to say “no” once. I have often wondered whether I should move to Laos for a more true cultural experience. People have often told me that Laos is Thailand twenty years ago. Which is great in theory, though I do like some of my modern luxuries. Though as long as I have my laptop and a good Internet connection then I will be happy. They have many Internet cafes here around Luang Prabang and both price and the speed are not too bad. I think at the end of the day, I would like to come here on holidays, but I wouldn’t want to live here permanently. The weather is one draw back at least. I tell you it is freezing cold here in the mornings. There is low cloud and the sun doesn’t managed to break through until at least mid morning. I am so glad I brought my thick jacket. I much prefer it to being too hot than too cold. If you are interested in learning Lao, then visit our new website at LearningLao.com and also our discussion forum where you can download some free mp3 recordings. In addition you will find links for buying books and CD courses.

No Reservations Trailer

I’m not much one for romantic comedies in general. Don’t get me wrong, there are a couple of them that I think are gold, but aside from Zombie movies you’ll never find a more formulaic genre of film in the business today. Formulas aren’t necessarily a bad thing when they work… but that’s not too often. So here comes the No Reservations trailer. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, here’s a quick synopsis: Abigail Breslin as Zoe stars in a story about Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a Master Chef who is unexpectedly named the guardian of her young niece. Her blossoming relationship with sous chef Nick (Aaron Eckhart) helps to put her newfound responsibility into perspective. The Trailer looks like the movie could be charming even if not very original… if handled correctly. I’m interested to see if Catharine Zeta Jones can still be a star (seriously… how fast did she vanish after Chicago?), I’ll see anything Eckhart is in… and pretty much all of us are dying to see Breslin again… so why not? You can see the No Reservations trailer below:

Reviewed by Aaron Bossig Quote: “Why release a good set first, and then throw a compilation disc out after the fact? Yes, it’s cheap, but it’s not like the season sets were that expensive.”

Should Public Tax Dollars Be Used To Fund The Movie Industry?

Get a conversation started about what public tax dollars should or shouldn’t be spent on, and you’ll get a LOT of people joining the conversation. This story that I read over at Yahoo News got me thinking about just that issue again. First… here’s the story in question: Mexican directors Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuaron, fresh off a raft of awards season accolades, have met with Mexico’s new president to urge more support for the struggling national film industry. The so-called “three amigos” said on a Tuesday news program that they recently met with President Felipe Calderon in a bid to garner more backing for the industry. They added that they plan to meet with lawmakers Wednesday. The three filmmakers, who also produce movies, are pressuring the federal government to create better distribution and exhibition opportunities for local production companies. Of about 60 films produced here in 2006, only half hit theaters. Ok, first let me say that I have NO PROBLEM with these guys looking to get support for their art and their business. They have the right to ask, and I think there’s nothing wrong with the asking. The question is… what should governments and societies do with those requests for public funds to assist a certain industry? According to reports, the movie industry generated almost $30 Billion dollars at the international box office last year… and none of that takes DVD sales into account either. There is no denying that the movies are a BIG business. A-List actors making upwards of $20 million per movie (really stupid) so much glitter and glamour doesn’t really lend itself to being an industry with a poor man’s hat out to the government looking for a hand out does it? On the one hand, take Canada for example. Canada has HUGE tax breaks and benefits for making movies here (one of the reasons so many Hollywood movies are produced up North of the Boarder these days). The benefit is that it increases Canada’s image on the international stage, it generates lots of jobs in the industry for people who live here, and those people pay taxes. There is no denying that there are some tangible benefits to the government helping out with the movie industry. However, on the other hand… when our education system, health system and just over all financial status is precarious to say the least… is giving free money to a $30+ BILLION dollar industry really what tax payers dollars should be used for? They want to shoot a Samuel L. Jackson movie up here? Great! What’s that? Jackson alone is getting $8 million, the movie will probably make $50 million at the box office… and they want ME to pay for it???? Are they going to share the profits by putting money back into the tax coffers? No? That doesn’t seem right, and a LOT of people have a problem with it. This is one of those rare issues that I don’t really have a strong opinion on either way yet. I just thought it was an interesting question and I thought I’d throw it open to you guys to discuss. So what do you think?

After the Chinese New Year bomb blast, despite all the negative response and advice, I decided to go with a long time no see hometown friend Phil, to visit Pattani, the Muslim centre of the South. The night before leaving for Pattani, we were briefed and cautioned by a friend who is a high ranking government official based in Pattani. Having such a lovely moment with his family around the beautiful beach of Songkhla, our two hours of conversation was mostly centered around the situation in Pattani. The description was saddening but interesting and provided us with new insights. It was like listening to the life of someone from another planet! After all the discouraging remarks of our planned trip to Pattani the next day, I decided to take the risk as Phil promised to take care of me should anything happen . ? I was getting excited and a little uneasy as our car was approaching Pattani. We stopped by a road side stall selling sea coconut. Asking about the situation in Pattani, the trader seemed reserved and reluctant to answer our questions. It was the first time I took the fresh sea coconut and the sea coconut juice, right here in Pattani. Equipped with a borrowed bullet proof jacket, I left Phil in the car to have a quick tour and take snapshots of the tourist attractions- The beautiful Pattani Central Mosque, The ruined Kru Se Mosque, the Shrine of Chao Mae Lim Ko Nieo. (pic) The Pattani Central Mosque/The ruined and cursed Kru Se Mosque (pic) The Shrine of Chao Mae Lim Ko Nieo at the road side/The closed candle shops Pattani is popular for its annual Chao Mae Lim Ko Nieo Fair which was to be held from 1-7 March. The annual fair pays homage to the Goddess Cho Mae Lim Ko Nieo with a colourful procession, walking on fire and swimming across the river near Dechanuchit Bridge. According to the traders around here, in the past there would be at least 80 to 100 tour buses each day bringing thousands of worshippers to the fair each year. However, there were hardly any buses now. We also drove around the town to have a feel of the atmosphere. Contrary to what I thought that there would be a lot of Islamic structural buildings, the town seems quite modern and well developed, though a little quiet. It even has more Chinese New Year decorations than in Betong. (pic) The quite Chao Mae Lim Ko Nieo and the quite dried seafood stalls (pic) Pattani town/One of the CNY decorations in the town The next day before saying good bye to this town, we were attracted by a bird competition crowded with thousands of people with beautiful cages hanging in the big compound area. As usual, I get excited about new things and couldn t help to join the crowd, asking questions and taking pictures until the driver rang and advised me not to stay too long. Phil told me that I was the only lady among the crowd. Before coming, Phil assured me that it would be an exciting and unforgettable journey. Indeed it was, but no matter how normal it seems and how exciting the journey, we couldn t help the feel of uneasiness and tension in our heart. I d opt not to come again! One of the bird competition sites (Tomorrow: Betong is roaring!)

The Grand Palace Many people who visit thai-blogs.com are looking for ideas for their next holiday to Thailand. For most people, their holidays always start and end in Bangkok. Some people like to get out of the city as quick as they can. However, the city has a lot to offer. What I am going to briefly describe for you today is a basic one day tour that you can easily do yourself. No need to pay for tour guides or rent a driver for the day. My brother is in Bangkok for the weekend. It is his first time in Thailand. This is my summary of a good introduction to Bangkok for day one. We started our tour at Siam Square. It is a good central area with plenty of shopping malls and hotels. When I stay in Bangkok I quite often stay at the Asia Hotel (see thaihotelfinders.com) as it has a direct link to the sky train. It is only one stop away from Siam Square. From here our first destination was the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Traffic was light and we made good progress by taxi. Whenever taking a taxi in Bangkok, always make sure that he turns on the meter. This should start at 35 baht. The Thai word for meter is the same so just say ?bert meter? if he hasn?t turned it on. Our trip only cost 65 baht (present exchange rate is 35 baht for one US dollar). Don?t take a tuk tuk. They will try and cheat you. It was about 10.30 a.m. when we arrived at the Grand Palace. The taxi dropped us off at the main entrance. Make sure you are dressed suitably which means long trousers and shoes with a closed heal. If you are wearing shorts you can borrow a wraparound at the entrance. The entrance fee for the Grand Palace is 250 baht. It is free if you are Thai. We first went into the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew). This place is simply stunning and should be a must if you are visiting Bangkok. As some of you may know, this was my second visit this month. I could easily go again. Next door to the temple is the Grand Palace. The King no longer lives here but you can admire the architecture and watch the changing of the guard. We were just over an hour here though during my previous visit I was there more than two hours. A long-tailed boat on the Thonburi canals We then exited the Grand Palace and turned left walking towards the river and Chang Pier. Our intention was to rent a long-tailed boat for an hour to explore the Thonburi canals on the other side of the river. Even before we reached the pier we were met by touts who wanted to sell their tours. The last time I had done a boat tour must have been four years ago and it cost 400 boat to rent a boat. The first tout wanted 800 baht each! I told him we weren?t interested and kept walking. We eventually found the counter for the tour boats. Unfortunately, even though he was cheaper, he still wanted 900 baht for the two of us. I told him I wasn?t interested as it was way too expensive. As we were walking out, one of the earlier touts came running up to us and said 600 baht for the two of us. Still a bit expensive but this is the price the Bangkok Tourist office had told me that they now charge. Bangkok used to be known as the Venice of the East. Unfortunately most of the canals have been filled in now to create new roads. However, on the opposite side of the river, in Thonburi, there is still an opportunity to see how Bangkok people have lived for generations. The boat we rented was a long-tailed boat much like the one pictured above. We started on the mighty Chao Phraya River and soon entered the much quieter canals on the other side. In less than ten minutes, we had left the city and were literally in a jungle. All of the houses were single stories and either side were banana trees and palm trees. There aren?t any roads here and the postman and other essential services all come by boat. Along the way you will see river life in action as well as some real floating markets. Our tour was about one hour. You can choose to take longer tours. There are a number of places that you can stop at along the way such as the Royal Barges Museum. For myself, one hour is more than enough. The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho Before we left on our boat tour, I told them that we wanted to finish at Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn) which is on the opposite side of the river to the Grand Palace and a bit further south. This saved us on fees for transport to our next stop. As this had a private landing, we had to pay a fee of 20 baht for the boat to stop here. I have talked about Wat Arun before. This is a 82 metre high prang which is decorated with broken Chinese porcelain. This was quite common at the time as the Chinese used it as ballast in their trading junks. For their return journey there was no need for the ballast. Other unwanted ballast included the statues which can be found at many of the Bangkok temples. When we arrived at the temple we walked to the far end first where there is a small market. We walked through this for a while until we found a small entrance. Temples are free for Thai people and Buddhist to visit. This one is 20 baht for foreigners or free if you use the same entrance as we did. There are donation boxes if you want to help with the renovation of the temple. I think the last time it was covered in scaffolding was about five years ago. It is badly in need of a face lift again. From the public pier, we used the ferry to cross the river to the opposite bank. This was only 3 baht each. Looking back we had some fine views of Wat Arun so don?t forget to take some pictures. Once we arrived on the other side we walked straight out to the main road. To our left was the boundary wall of the Grand Palace. To our right was the buildings belonging to Wat Pho. We used the nearest entrance and as soon as we were inside the temple we turned right. To our left was the big building which housed the Reclining Buddha. But, I wanted to leave that to last as it is the highlight. I first wanted to explore the other areas. Wat Pho is considered the center of traditional Thai massage. Indeed, the temple is also known as Thailand?s first university. Instruction was given by paintings on the wall and the statues of different yoga positions. In one of the cloisters you will find a large collection of Buddha images. The three large chedis commemorate the first three Chakri kings. This temple is actually much older than them as it predates the founding of Bangkok. The temple dates back more than 300 years. In one of the temples, the ashes of King Rama I are kept under the main Buddha image. I forgot to say before that the ashes of King Rama II are under the principle Buddha image at Wat Arun. The Reclining Buddha is of course the highlight of any visit to this temple. That is why we decided to save it for last. As we were going into this building, I noticed a side entrance where people were charging foreigners 50 baht to enter. Again, we had mistakenly come in through the wrong entrance. Never mind, there are donation boxes where you can help with the upkeep of the temple. The Reclining Buddha is absolutely stunning. You really need a wide angle lens to get it all in your picture. The length is 43 meters and the feet are covered in mother of pearl. Some guidebooks call this the longest Reclining Buddha in Thailand. But, it is the third longest that I have seen. The longest one is in Bang Phli in Samut Prakan. However, I think there will be longer one in the future in Suphan Buri. Before you leave this building, you can make a donation to buy a bowl of pennies. You then drop these into a long row of bowls for good luck. Jim Thompson?s House By this time it was already after two o?clock and we were in need of a break and some lunch. Don?t forget, with the heat in Thailand you not only need to use sun protection, but also drink plenty of water. If you don?t you will regret it later. Bottled water should be about 10 baht but they might charge you more in tourist areas. We decided to catch a taxi back to our starting point and have a late lunch at the MBK shopping mall. The taxi ride was 80 baht this time. The shopping mall is air-conditioned and so it was a welcome relief form the heat. It is a good idea to spend the middle of the day in one of the shopping malls. On the 6th floor of MBK you will find the large food court. You have to buy coupons first. We bought 100 baht of coupons which was just enough. It doesn?t matter if you buy too much as you can get them refunded after the meal. We bought a choice of two curries on rice for 40 baht. Water was 10 baht per bottle. Our next destination was Jim Thompson?s House. This is within easy walking distance of MBK. We took the exit to the National Stadium sky train station and crossed to the other side of the road. Here we turned left and kept waking to the far end of the sky train station. Near here we saw a sign that directed us to turn right down a small lane. The house is at the far end just before a canal. For people who don?t know, Jim Thomposn is largely responsible for the revival of the Thai silk industry and for propelling it onto the international stage. But, we didn?t come here for the silk. Jim lived in a group of Thai traditional houses which today is opened as a museum containing many of his art collections. If you want to see traditional Thai houses then this is a good place for you to come. The cost is only 100 baht per person. You have to join the tours that take you around the garden and through the house. You are allowed to take pictures outside but not inside the house. The Erawan Shrine By this time it was starting to be a long day for us. We were hot and our feet were beginning to ache. But, we had one more stop. We walked back to the main road where we rode an escalator up to the sky train platform above the road. We wanted to do one final stop. This was the Erawan Shrine near Chit Lom station. From the National Stadium we had to go one stop to Siam and then change tracks and then go one more stop to Chit Lom. This is the station for several big shopping malls including Central World. The Erawan Shrine was full of local and foreign merit makers. People come here to wish for good luck. If their wish comes true then they offer the spirit things like wooden elephants and food. They also pay for traditional Thai dancers to perform for the spirits. This is a great place to sit and watch the activity for a while. It is also a great place to enjoy Thai dancing for free! Well, that was the end of our day long tour. I don?t think you would want to do much more than that. Maybe spend the rest of the day in one of the local shopping malls like Central World or Siam Paragon. Maybe even watch a movie. If you are up to it, you could go and watch Muay Thai at one of the boxing stadiums. Over the coming weeks I will give you some more ideas of places you can visit in Bangkok. But, I think today is a good tour of some of the highlights.

Could it be? Might it actually happen? If so… my joy will be overwhelming. But I still can’t quite bring myself to believe it. News on the Indiana Jones 4 front (which I still think is a giant elaborate lie by Spielberg and Lucas to torture us fans, considering how many times over they last 10 years they’ve said it was on, only to later recant) is buzzing today with the report that Cate Blanchett has signed on. The good folks over at Comingsoon give us this: Blanchett has signed on to star in the fourth installment of the “Indiana Jones” adventures. With David Koepp’s screenplay shrouded in secrecy, it is unclear what character Blanchett will play. Harrison Ford already has boarded the project, which will be produced by Lucasfilm and directed by Steven Spielberg. Holy smokes… if this movie actually happens I’ll be beside myself. Unlike a lot of other people, I’ve always thought a story of an aging Indian Jones… now later on in his life, would be an EXCELLENT story to tell. The addition of Cate Blanchett is an amazing development… you know… if this movie actually happens.

“Buckle up for this amusing, exciting and hilarious adventure” (Janet Stokes, Film Advisory Board, Inc.) with everyone’s favorite inquisitive little monkey! When The Man in the Yellow Hat befriends Curious George in the jungle, they set off on a non-stop, fun-filled journey through the wonders of the big city toward the warmth of true friendship. Featuring the voice talents of Will Ferrel, Drew Barrymore and an all-star cast, Curious George is a “family classic” (Dean Richards, WGN-TV) that will have the kid inside everyone giggling with delight again and again.

Review

Curious George is a cute, fun loving little monkey, but when he follows the man with the yellow hat to New York, he creates a little trouble. In this funny and sweet movie, Curious George and the man with the yellow hat discover that they not only need eachother, but if they are not together, their lives do not seem complete. This was a wonderful movie to see, and I would recomend it to anybody who loves a good movie. This was one of my favorite movies of all time.
